May 31, 2008:
Hi! Boys and Girls.  Well, I am still alive and kicking.  Last time I saw you guys Frankie and I were living and working in Gulfport, Ms.  About three years ago Katrina moved us to Destin, FL.  Frankie is a little younger than I, and she found a job over here she likes.  I just retired. We live at 100 Seascape Drive, Unit 85A Miramar Beach, FL. 32550 about 2 blocks from the nicest beach I ever saw.  I spend a lot of time at the beach.
I had a light heart attack this past Xmas.  I'm doing OK but my doctor doesn't want me making any trips yet.  So I won't be able to come see you guys this time.  Have a great time!

Well, I have been retired for around 5 years from Federal Express after 25 years.  What a wonderful opportunity I had.  Traveled many places and enjoyed every second of it.  I  now play golf, bowl, play bridge, garden and travel a lot.  It seems I am never at home.  I am blessed by a wonderful husband of near 35 years and two terrific children.  I currently have no grandchildren but hopefully that will  come sometime soon.  Hope all of you have a great time at the reunion.  I am unsure as to whether we will be able to attend.  Life is good.

June 21, 2007:
    Forty-five years?!
I’d say that’s impossible…except for the fact that I am the mother of three grown children.  My oldest son is a missionary doctor in Cusco, Peru.  He and his wife are the parents of two daughters, 7 and 5.  My daughter and her husband live in Iowa, and have one son, 9, and two daughters, 7 and 4.  My youngest son and his wife were just married last October and live in Chicago.  I’m so thankful that each of my children is healthy, happy and successful.  I am especially blessed to have five wonderful grandchildren who make my heart sing!
I’ve learned that the heart is an amazing thing these past few years…
I was married to Bill Allen (Treadwell ’62) for almost 39 years, when – sadly - it ended in divorce.  A few months after the divorce, Bill died of a massive coronary.  I moved to Iowa to be closer to two of my children and continued working as a Registered Nurse.  Thankfully, God gave me the strength to take one day at the time, and meant it when He said, “My grace is sufficient for you”.  While I wasn’t sure my heart would ever feel true joy again, God had a plan – on March 17, 2007, in a Scottish wedding in Iowa (complete with bagpipes!), I married Jim Campbell.  His wife of 33 years had died of cancer two years ago.  It was a beautiful ceremony with my two sons giving me away…his two daughters giving him away…my daughter as Matron of Honor and all five of my grandchildren in the wedding.
I now live on a tree farm on the Callahan Mountain range in western Oregon.  The scenery is absolutely breathtaking…and there is a lot of laughter in our home.
May 31, 2008:
Hi, 1963 Classmates!  I had high hopes and a plane ticket to Memphis; but, unfortunately it didn't work out for me to make the trip after all.  I'm so disappointed that I won't get to see you all!  We'll all have to do our best to stick around until the 50th and I'll look forward to seeing you then.
I just returned from three weeks in Peru visiting my son who is a missionary doctor there.  If interested, here's the link: http://www.patacakebabies.com/Three_Weeks_in_Peru.htm
I think most of us have figured out by now that life is pretty short, so I think it's a good idea to stay in touch now that we've found each other again!  Here are a few more links to keep up with my life and I'd love to keep in touch with each of you.  So, please email me and let me know if you have a website or a blog!

June 21, 2003:

After that very exciting day when we all graduated from Kingsbury, I enrolled in college and continued and continued and continued until finally earning a Ph.D.  I began my career teaching in college.  Even though I now work for the government, I still teach (would you believe Government Regulations i.e. OSHA.)  In 1999, I was voted by my students “Outstanding Teacher of the Year.”  I was excited about that since government regulations is one of the more “interesting” academic subject matter taught in college!  With the government, I write safety and training manuals.  Also, I do a large amount of consulting with private businesses and as well as auditing companies for OSHA violations.
I am still married to my 1st wife.  We have one offspring, and unlike most of you I am not old enough to have any grandchildren yet.

After about 45 years, I retired from being a church organist that probably made a lot of people happy.  We enjoy traveling, and I remain a committed and avid reader.
It is my prayer that each of you has found true happiness.

June 5, 2007:
After high school, I went to Memphis State for a year and then joined the Air Force in the summer of 65.  I was sent to Lackland AFB in Texas where I was trained as a language specialist.  By the luck of the draw I was assigned to learn Polish.  After all the tech schools, I was sent to Rhein Main AB in Frankfurt, Germany for a 2 and a half year term.
I came home and returned to Memphis State and studied accounting.  Never finished school, but landed a job in accounting with National Safety Associates.  Worked for NSA 20 years until 1993.
Now I own and operate two businesses.  I'm a professional mobile disc jockey and I design and build websites for individuals and companies.  Check out my websites at

I have been married to David Robertson 21 great years.  This is a second marriage for both of us.  'We live in Horn Lake, Ms., and are very happy.  My first marriage was to Jerry Clowney - we had three children.  David and his first wife also had 3 children.  Now we are proud grandparents of 18 grandchildren.  David is the best thing that has every happened to me and we are very happy together.

April 25, 2008:

This is my first update, but I will make it brief.  In 1963 Bernie Speer (class of '62) and I were married.  He had joined the Air Force, so we moved around a lot and we lost contact with almost everyone, but finally landed in Tampa, Florida, where we lived for almost 18 years. Moved back here in 1983.  Bernie passed away in 2000; we had been married 36-1/2 yrs.  We have always loved dogs - our 1st in Fla. was an Irish Setter, next an English Springer who moved back to Memphis with us.  And finally, a beautiful Golden Retriever named Taylor. Taylor left me in Aug. of last year and I rescued another beautiful Golden from the Memphis Golden Retriever Rescue.  Her name is Lindsay Grace; she is now a year old.  I work for Marx & Bensdorf Real Estate here in Memphis as the manager - truly love my job.  Have been in real estate since 1979 in some capacity, including agent.  I sincerely hope everyone has found happiness in their lives - we had such a great class.  It is true sorrow for those we have lost. Thanks for listening!  My email address is:  Kspeer@marx-bensdorf.com or Kayspeer45@hotmail.com

The journey I have traveled is a path some would not take, but through the trials and tests, I have grown to love the Lord more deeply.  My sweet, precious husband (a gift from the Lord) was called home two years ago and within less than five months, I lost my dad.  My family, friends and church home have been a beacon for me.  Kurt (my husband) and I would have been married 36 years, but I still have my two daughters and three grandchildren, Brandon, 12; Hayden, 9; and Camden, 3.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone.

November 17, 2007:
Lynn and I have been happily married for 43 years. He was a 1961 graduate of Whitehaven High and we were introduced by Barbara Massengill Traylor and her husband, Jimmy.  Jimmy and Lynn knew each other at Whitehaven.  Lynn retired from the Hormel Corp after 36 years and we are enjoying traveling and spending time with our two grandchildren, Catelyn 4 1/2 and Cole 17 mos.  We have one son, Gary, who has been the joy of our life.  He and his wife, Ashlyn, and the children live here in Houston, so we get to see them every week and baby-sit when needed.  I am still working with my decorating business but work only on referrals now and can take off when Lynn says "let's go."  Go has always been my middle name!  God has blessed our life and I am thankful for his guidance.

May 7, 2008:

On the outside I am old, short and fat.  On the inside I feel timeless and as vast as the Grand Canyon – filled with God’s peace and His vastness is very present.

I am single longer than I was married (20 years).  I have three adult children.  My two married daughters have a total of four boys and one girl (ready to be born in a couple of weeks).  My son is single.  I work full time and hopefully can for ten more years.

I have been blessed to be reacquainted with the gang of KHS girls for over a year now.

My joy or brain candy is my work with the Chancel Choir at my church.  The classical music has made me work very hard.  I hope it helps to keep my brain young!—ok, younger.

Please make an effort to come to our reunion. Let us share our lives again!  By now we know who we are.  I will be so happy to see you June 6 and 7.

June 21, 2003:
The past ten years have brought about many changes, mostly good.  Our three sons are now grown and on their own (thank goodness).  We are blessed to have all three living in the Memphis area.  Our oldest son, Brad, age 32, works for the Department of Revenue and is single.  Kevin, 31, is working with his father in the printing business and is married to Laurie Brimm, the daughter of ’62 KHS alumni, Jimmy Brimm.  Our youngest son, Tim, 26, is a CPA and works for Mid-America Apartment Communities.  He is engaged to Ashley Wilson of Collierville and will be getting married July 26.  This is a big year for us—of course the reunion, the wedding, and October 31 I will become a grandmother.  We’ve just found out it’s a boy!  I am looking forward to all of it.
My husband, Bill, started his own printing distributorship in 1999 and works out of the house, along with our son, Kevin, so I never get lonely!  For relaxation, when we can get away, we enjoy going to Pickwick.  It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years.
April 29, 2008:
The past five years have been happy, rewarding, and challenging.  We have had 3 additions to our family.  Tim, our youngest son, married soon after our last reunion and we have a wonderful daughter-in-law, Ashley Wilson.  Kevin and Laurie gave us two beautiful grandchildren, Luke who is 4 and Callie, 21 months.  I finally got my little girl and oh how I’ve enjoyed her!  I keep them 2 days a week.  At the end of those 2 days, I feel every bit my age of 62 (plus a few more years!).  I wouldn’t trade my time with them for anything and feel so blessed to have my family close by.  I have 1 single son, Brad, but (as most mothers wish) maybe the next 5 years will bring me another daughter-in-law!  Bill is still working hard but hopes to retire within the next few years.
I have enjoyed meeting monthly with the “KHS girls”.  Those of you who haven’t participated, please join us.  I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the reunion.

May 31, 2008:
I married William Turner, a 1962 graduate of Ripley High School, and he is still the love of my life.  We have been married for 45 years and were blessed to have three beautiful daughters that married three wonderful men.  We have five grandchildren, four boys and one girl, ranging in age eight to eighteen.  Isn’t it wonderful how God gives us another chance to love and receive love from a child and see the world once again through a child’s eye?
I retired from the federal government in 2005, and my husband retired from county government effective May 1, 2008.  I worked five years for IRS and twenty-one years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Cotton Program.
Now that we have both retired, our plans are to plant a huge garden each year.  I know that it will take up most of our summer but it is something we both enjoy.

I would like to extend my warmest regards to the class of 1963 and may God bless each one of you.

June 21, 2003:

A lot of things have changed since we were all together in 1993.  Brenda and I have gone from 1 grandchild to 7 grandchildren (see Brenda’s article for more details).  I became pastor of a Southern Baptist Church in January of 1994.  It was a bi-vocational position.  I am still there and am in my 10th year.  The church is Wisetown Baptist Church, a rural church in a farming community.  I retired from the pharmacy in June of 2000 due to the progression of an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa.  I am now legally blind, but use all the tools available to keep going.  I had a 32-year career in pharmacy and am now enjoying a second career in the ministry.  God has blessed us over the years and we look forward to what He has in store for the future.  We look forward to seeing all of you this summer.
April 15, 2008:
I retired from the pharmacy in 2000 due to my eyesight.  Brenda is still managing the pharmacy however.  I have been pastoring Wisetown Baptist Church in Greenville, Il since 1994.  God has blessed me with two great careers.  We have seven grandchildren and they also keep us busy.  Tammie and her husband Dave have four children and live in New Baden, Il, about six miles from us.  Jacob is 17 and will be a senior next year and plans to go into pharmacy, Ashleigh and Austin are 12 year old twins and will start Jr. high next fall, and Cameron is 5 and will start kindergarten in the fall.  Brent and his wife April have 3 children and live in Memphis.  Amberly is 14 and enters the 9th grade at Arlington High School in the fall, Carter is 10 and will be in the 5th grade, and Braedyn is 6 and will start 1st grade.  We enjoy being grandparents and look forward to seeing them all grow up.  I can't wait to see everyone in June.

April 20, 2008:
Since I left Memphis for college the fall after graduation, I have basically only returned to Memphis for visits.  However, during the college summers and holiday periods, Martha Dee Lynch did arrange for a blind date for me with one of her friends at Southwestern (now Rhodes) - which turned out very well.  Charlotte became my wife and Martha Dee and Keith White have continued to be very close friends for both of us.
Getting married right after graduation from UT (Go Big Orange and Go Vols is in my blood), I took a job in St. Louis and eventually stayed there for 30 years. We raised our two children there, Kathy and Gregory and they retained a lot of the Tennessee connection with our trips back to Memphis and they also both ended up going back to Tennessee for their college (Rhodes and Vanderbilt).  They both spent a year abroad and then returned to home, so Charlotte and I were ultimately the ones who eventually moved out as I took a new job in Connecticut and they remained in St. Louis.  So St. Louis is another place where we periodically visit now in addition to Memphis.
I have remained in the aerospace field through all these years with my latest job working on an Australian helicopter program which required me to be in Australia about 25 times over the last ten years.  So I have become quite familiar with the country and “G’Day Mates” and other Australian phrases – even though my Southern accent just does not have the right type of sound.  I actually retired once when I left St. Louis, but have not moved to the next phase of stopping work completely, but certainly am looking forward to that time.  In between the times of working and raising a family, I earned a couple of more degrees (Masters in Engineering and then an Executive MBA), and have kept involved in our church activities and the Boy Scouts (continue to run across Doyle Silliman at National BSA events).
Charlotte and I did make a couple of the earlier reunions, but since it has been a “quarter of a century” now since the last one we attended, I am looking forward to reacquainting with my classmates from KHS – just be sure there are name tags so my memory can have a chance.

P.S.  Shirley Holcomb mentioned in one of the past KHS memories the Halloween party at my house where she came in costume as a witch.  I subsequently located a 8mm movie clip from that party that showed Shirley in her outfit.  After sending her a digital file of this moment in history, she informed me that she actually still has the costume she wore at the party!!

Our son, Robert, is a City of Memphis Fire Fighter/EMT.  Robert and his wife, Deana, have a one-year-old daughter, Riley Grace.  Deana is a stay-at-home mom.  She left her job with International Paper to be a full time mom for Riley.  Needless to say, Grandma and Grandpa Neal try to spend as much time as possible with Riley too.
Sometime during the past 10 years, I seem to have become the “Family Historian” (possibly because I have more time).  Up until the vision decline, you would find me (when able) at the Tennessee Genealogical Library, the Memphis/Shelby County Libraries, roaming cemeteries, or visiting relatives looking for family information and histories.  Many of the family legends that my parents shared over the years began to make sense.
During the search for facts, I have met some fascinating people.  Lots of them have been relatives or far off “cousins,” but many have been fellow researchers.  There is a story in the life of everyone.

Bill and I are enjoying retirement with plenty of time to spend with our family.  We have been members of Brunswick Baptist Church since 1990 and praise the Lord for our Christian family too.  We have lived in the Northeast area of Shelby County since 1986.  We moved away from the city, but now the city is moving to us.  Life moves on!
October 24, 2007:
As the old saying goes "HOW TIME FLYs BY."  Life has certainly been a journey.  Bill and I have been married many years.  He retired from the Memphis Fire Dept. in 2002 with over 33 years of service.  I gave up my job with Kraft Foods in 1992 due to health problems.  After Bill was tired of retirement he went to work for Northwest Airlines.
Our sons, Michael and Robert are both grown.  Robert, his wife, Deana and two children, Riley and Dylan live close by in the Brunswick Farms area.  As all grandparents could probably say, grandchildren are a gift from God.  They bring a smiling face and piece of sunshine with them when we see them.
Riley is 5 years old and attends kindergarten at the ECS Ridgeway Campus.  She also is learning to play the piano and will give her own performance for the family any time we will listen.  She is our little princess, but also capable of catching frogs, worms, caterpillars and all God's little critters she can find.  She loves gardening and just being in "nature" as she calls it.
Dylan is 2 now and our little man and loves all things that run on wheels or fly in the air.  His Uncle Mike is his best buddy (after his Daddy), because Uncle Mike has large equipment for his construction business.  Also one of Dylan's favorite things is Uncle Mike's Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Family is our focus these days which we praise the Lord for.  We have lived in this area since 1986 and have been members at Brunswick Baptist Church since then. Our church family is also a large part of our world especially during some trying times when we've needed many prayers.
It has been really great to attend some of the gatherings in the past few months. I'm looking forward to the reunion to get to see many more.

Since the last reunion, some things are changed.  I now have two cute grandsons.  Austin is 6 and Daniel is 8.  Our children are doing very well.  Billy and I still love to dance on weekends.  We belong to Memphis Boys Club and River City Boppers.  In 2002, I was inducted into the National Boppers Hall of Fame in Savannah, GA.  Billy and I both have met so many wonderful people at these clubs and feel it is a great honor to be associated with these clubs.  The year 2001 was a very hard year for me.  Billy had colon cancer and my dad had a stroke and is now in a nursing home in Somerville, TN.  Billy has done so well and I pray every day he will continue to stay cancer free.  We will have our 40th anniversary this year and I love him more every day.

I am most blessed with a wonderful daughter with two granddaughters and a wonderful son with two grandsons.  My daughter lives in Memphis and my son is Sr. Pastor of a church on the East Coast.  I was assistant to branch manager of a dental company, but due to health problems, have been on disability for over a year now.  I have been divorced for 3 years after a 34-year marriage.  My hobby is, what else but my grandchildren!  I do enjoy going to church, cooking and my computer is what I call my therapy—ha!  The Lord has really blessed my family and me.  Any of you that would like to email me, I would love to hear from you.

After graduation, I attended Memphis State University for several semesters prior to entering the USAF in 1967.  During my stay with the military, I married Elaine Skinner in 1968, who was originally from Bartlett, TN.  In 1974, I was employed by TVA and moved to Chattanooga, TN.  I lived in Chattanooga for six years and was transferred to Iuka, MS.  I worked in Iuka and lived in Savannah, TN for two years.  Again, I was transferred to a nuclear power plant in Alabama.  I worked at this construction project until 1988 and guess what!  I was transferred again to another nuclear power plant located in Athens, AL.  I worked in Athens for TVA until 1991 and was retired by TVA.  I continued to work at the plant with a contractor doing the same work.  In 1994, I was caught up in a reduction in force, so I returned to Savannah, TN to stay for 8 plus years working for a small manufacturing plant.  Recently I was employed by Shaw Construction Co. as a Field Engineer.  I am now back in Athens, AL working at TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant.  TVA decided to restart their Unit 1 reactor.  Yes, Browns Ferry is an operating nuclear plant, but I do not glow.  I am still in the Tennessee National Guard as a Fire Direction Center Chief for the 2-115 Field Artillery.  I was to drill the reunion weekend, but I will be at the reunion.
Now, as for as the family, Elaine and I have two grown “boy kids.”  Yes they are still kids! The oldest has four to contend with.  Two are his own and they are two-year-old twins.  That was a shock to his life style!  Our other son has a place of his own, but he still hangs around the house most of the time.  The oldest, Stephen, is 28 and David is 26.
January 29, 2008
Since our last reunion, I have retired from the Army National Guard and I have transferred from Alabama to South Carolina as a Construction Engineer with the same construction organization.  I still have my residence in Savannah, Tn.  I will be attending the reunion this year and look forward to seeing everyone.

Following graduation, I went to Lambuth College for one year before transferring to Memphis State where I graduated with a degree in sociology.  I worked briefly as a social worker, mainly with elderly clients.
In 1968 I married David Grant.  We moved to New Orleans where our first son, Kevin, was born.  We moved back to Memphis in 1970.  Our daughter, Mindy, was born in 1973.  When Kevin and Mindy were about high school age, lo and behold—a mid-life surprise—our son, Josh, was born.

Kevin is now the pastor of Christ Community Church in Hernando, Mississippi.  Mindy has worked with pre-schoolers for a number of years and is currently looking for another field.  Josh is completing his freshman year at Briarcrest.
I have not worked outside the home since our marriage but have kept busy with church activities and Bible studies.  In 1990 our parents began to be in frail health and could no longer live alone.  We decided to add on to our home to take care of them here.  It was a difficult decision, but we would do it again and have no regrets.
We have no grandchildren yet but look forward to it.
April 30, 2008:
David and I just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary.  We lived in Whitehaven for seven years then  in 1977 we moved into the home we're living in now.  Elvis died a week later.  (Apparently he took our move pretty hard).
After praying for years, we're finally getting something we've wanted a long time ...... a daughter-in-law.  Yes, our 38 year-old pastor son, still at Christ Community Church in Hernando, MS proposed to his bride-to-be last Sunday  (April 27th).  She is a staff writer and editor for Campus Crusade for Christ magazine Worldwide Challenge.  We're thrilled of course and her parents seem to be thrilled as well.  The wedding will probably be in Colorado in September.
Our daughter Mindy still works at Christ Methodist in Adult Ministries and Evangelism.  Our youngest son, Josh has his own apartment now and is a junior at the University of Memphis.

Time has gone by so rapidly and it just seems to be going faster.  Our years at Kingsbury seem a lifetime ago and yet like only yesterday.  It's amazing and a bit shocking to see how many class members we've lost in death.  This will be a very special reunion.
